History of Chilkur Balaji temple: Every year one Mr. Madhava Reddy, a devotee from chilkur village used to visit lord Venkateswara in Tirupati. On one occasion he could not able to visit because of ill health. He was worried about it. The lord Vekateswara came to his dream and asked him to dig at a place in his village to find him. Like that the devotee dug and found lord balaji along with bhoodevi and sreedevi. While digging with axe it struck the idol of lord balaji at chin and chest. One can find these scars on the idol. The Temple was built by Akkanna and Madanna the uncle of Bhakta Ramdas about more than 400 years ago. It was built during Golconda was built.
Dress code at the temple: in order to encourage the debt ridden weavers from some parts of Telangana region like Sirsilla in Karimnagar district, the temple trustees have taken up the dress code of wearing only handloom apparel for those devotees praying their obeisance on Saturdays.
How to reach Chilkur Balaji: Chilkur Balaji is located nearly 30 kms from Hyderabad centre. From mehdipatnam one has to take the Hydrabad Bijapur or Vikarabad highway. They have to take a right turn from himayathnagar village. It is nearly 3 km from himayathnagar village. One will get APSRTC buses from mehdipatnam to the chilkur balaji temple with a frequency of half an hour.
What to do at the temple: The Devotees have to make 11 pradakshanas and make a wish. If the wish is fulfilled the devotees have to take 108 pradakshanas around the temple.
