It is a time of spiritual reflection, devotion, and expressing deep gratitude towards those who have imparted wisdom and guidance.

Significance of Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima holds a special place in the hearts of spiritual seekers, students, and devotees. The word "guru" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "gu," meaning darkness, and "ru," meaning remover. A guru is regarded as the one who dispels the darkness of ignorance and leads the disciple towards enlightenment. Guru Purnima is an occasion to acknowledge the invaluable teachings, support, and guidance received from spiritual mentors or any person who has significantly influenced our lives.

Celebrations and Rituals

Guru Purnima is celebrated with great enthusiasm and reverence throughout India. Devotees engage in various rituals and practices to honor their gurus. Here are some common customs observed on this auspicious day:

  1. Paying Respect: Disciples express their reverence and gratitude by offering flowers, garlands, and performing aarti (ritual of waving lighted lamps) to their gurus. This act symbolizes the disciple's dedication and respect towards the guru.
  2. Guru Puja: Special puja ceremonies are conducted in ashrams, temples, and spiritual centers dedicated to gurus. Devotees gather to chant mantras, offer prayers, and seek blessings from their revered teachers.
  3. Discourse and Satsang: Spiritual discourses, teachings, and satsangs (spiritual gatherings) are organized where gurus share their wisdom and insights. These sessions provide an opportunity for disciples to deepen their understanding of spiritual principles and seek guidance for their spiritual journey.
  4. Guru Dakshina: It is a tradition for disciples to offer Guru Dakshina, which can be in the form of monetary contributions, services, or any valuable offering as a token of gratitude and support to their gurus.
  5. Seva and Charity: Many individuals also engage in selfless acts of service (seva) and charitable activities on Guru Purnima, reflecting the teachings of compassion and selflessness imparted by their gurus.
